Solid Waste

Many local governments are responsible for managing solid waste created by households and businesses within their communities. In particular, solid waste management begins with the collection and storage of solid waste. Collection involves either picking up waste curbside or gathering it from drop-off locations. Storage operations involve maintaining the waste at interim sites prior to recycling or final disposal.

Numerous local and county solid waste organizations from around the country have implemented or are implementing environmental management systems (EMSs). The resources below provide EMS tools, case studies, the benefits realized, procedures and training, frequently asked questions, and points-of-contact from solid waste facilities that have developed EMSs.
