The ports sector includes marine cargo loading and unloading, operation of port and waterfront terminals (i.e., piers/docks/buildings), and in some cases, operations and maintenance of public airports. In addition, projected port growth will have tremendous implications for intermodal transportation, e.g. ships, trucks, and trains, as well as property and land utilized for port activity. Numerous public seaports from around the country have implemented or are implementing environmental management systems (EMSs). The resources below provide EMS tools, case studies, the benefits realized, procedures and training, frequently asked questions, and points-of-contact from public seaports that have developed EMSs.
AAPA announces the 3rd Port EMS/SMS Assistance Project! The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) and the Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF) are pleased to announce the initiation of the 3rd Round of the Port Environmental Management System (EMS) Assistance Project. We are currently accepting applications from ports interested in participating in this Port EMS Assistance Project. Congratulations to the 2nd Port EMS/SMS Assistance Project Graduates! Graduates of the AAPA GETF Environmental Management System (EMS) Project received a certificate of recognition on April 1, 2008 for their successful participation in the 18 month project. Recognized ports were characterized as leaders among their colleagues for their commitment to the environment. Alumni ports will be asked to participate as mentors within their local port community as well as share their knowledge with other port authorities as a result of their accomplishment.
