Introduction - Environmental Aspects and Impacts

Identifying and prioritizing the impacts your utility can have on the environment is one of the most important activities of implementing an EMS. A thorough environmental review of activities is critical to implementing an EMS as your significant environmental issues become the primary focal point for subsequent EMS tasks designed to control, reduce, or eliminate your wastewater utility's environmental impact.

This environmental review provides an opportunity for your organization to stop and take a hard look at your individual operations and activities, and identify those that can negatively and positively affect the environment. The result will be a list of potential environmental impacts and the wastewater processes/activities that can create them.

From this list, your wastewater team will prioritize those that are most significant and then work to control, reduce, or eliminate your utility's environmental impact.

Let's now review the 6 steps of conducting a review and prioritizing how your wastewater facility can impact the environment.
