Step-by-Step Guide to EMS Implementation
This section of the course describes the sequence of activities or "roadmap" for implementing the key elements of an EMS.
The elements of an EMS guide an organization to review, control, and reduce the environmental impact of its activities and operate with greater efficiency and control. Following the review and repeat cycle of an EMS encourages an organization to continuously improve its environmental performance.
Before you move on to the next sections and learn more about the step-by-step approach to EMS implementation, it is important to first review what it takes to prepare your facility for EMS implementation, as "getting ready" is the first true step. This first phase includes actions such as:
Choosing a fenceline or operational area for EMS implementation
Obtaining management commitment and sufficient resources
Identifying your EMS champion and supporting teams
Determining your organization goals
Conducting an EMS gap analysis
