Introduction: Monitoring and Measurement
So far, you've:
Identified your significant environmental aspects;
Set objectives and targets;
Conducted a review of your operations to identify regulatory and other requirements; and
Put procedures and work instructions (operational controls) in place to ensure that your environmental issues (i.e., significant aspects) are managed.
But how do you know that everything is performing as planned and achieving the desired results?
The next step is to monitor and measure your progress! Monitoring and measuring allows you to track your environmental performance, assess progress in meeting your objectives and targets and check your compliance toward meeting regulatory requirements. A successful monitoring and measurement program ensures improved efficiency and regularly confirms that your utility is effectively managing your most significant environmental impacts. Remember, you can't manage what you can't measure!
Data and information collected through routine monitoring and measurement can help you demonstrate the value of the EMS to top management, as well as to other interested parties such as your local community.
Let's now review the 7 steps to monitor and measure the operations and services under your EMS.
