Final Conclusion
Congratulations!
You've now completed the major steps to implement an EMS for your wastewater utility. As a review, utilizing this On-Line EMS Training Tool, you've walked through:
1) Getting your facility ready to implement an EMS in Phase I
2) Making plans by determining your environmental impact, reviewing legal requirements and setting goals for your EMS in Phase II.
3) Reviewing and implementing operational controls (i.e., training, communication, Emergency Response, procedures, policies and records) to manage your priority EMS issues in Phase III.
4) Monitoring and measuring key equipment, systems and your established environmental goals, as well as identifying and managing system nonconformances (check and correct) in Phase IV.
5) Evaluating the effectiveness and performance of your EMS during periodic management reviews in Phase V.
As you make the decision on the best way to implement an EMS for your utility, remember the keep it simple, simple (KISS) rule. Start with a manageable EMS Fenceline and a manageable number of environmental goals so that you can build success and momentum with top management and staff.
Remember to utilize the EMS Handbook for Wastewater Utilities as a tool to help you develop your EMS. In addition, there are a number of resources available to you from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (http://www.epa.gov/ems/) and the Public Entity EMS Resource (PEER) Center (http://www.peercenter.net).
Good luck!
