2) What types of benefits and value have organizations realized from an EMS?

The quantitative and qualitative benefits experienced by organizations that have implemented an EMS vary and are dependent on your organizational goals and areas of environmental focus.  However, the majority of organizations with an EMS have experienced a number of positive returns.

Examples of EMS benefits and value that organizations have realized can be reviewed in the following links and information:

The Utah Transit Authority estimates that their EMS has resulted in annual cost savings of $814,000 through enhanced operating procedures, reduced bus idling time, and correcting print shop issues.

Charleston Water acknowledged that their management system implemented under the EMS resulted in cost savings of $170,000/year through an improved bond rating.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey repaired water leaks, identified by their EMS as a significant environmental issue that reduced the average daily water loss by 640,000 gallons resulting in a cost savings of $655,000.

The Camden Municipal Utilities Authority sees savings of $5 million per year, thanks to the “Plan-Do-Check-Act” approach of its EMS.

The Camden Municipal Utilities Authority also enjoyed a drastic cut in their odor violations after implementing their EMS in 1998.  Between 1997 and 1998, they had 16 such violations.  Between April 1998 and December 2007, they had 4.
