Getting From Here to There (Environmental Management Programs)

Environmental management programs (EMPs) are the vehicle to achieve your environmental objectives and targets. There are three main components to an EMP:

  • Responsibility
    • Who’s responsible? Where appropriate, personnel should be designated at each relevant function and level
  • Resources
    • What’s needed? Human, technological, and/or financial allocations
  • Timeframe
    • When will the target be achieved? Are there milestones to your progress?

Developing an EMP – An example

  • Objective: reduce overall electricity consumption by 20% by May 2003
  •  Target:
    • Reduce vehicle maintenance facility by 15%
    • Reduce office building by 30%
      • Resources - Is it in the budget?
  • What do you need?
    • Time (those involved will need it)
    • Retrofit
  • Contractor
    • Equipment
    • Energy efficient lighting
    • Light sensors
      • Roles and responsibilities
  • Vehicle maintenance shop
    • Shop Manager (resources)
    • Shop Foreman (implementation)
  • Offices
    • Office Manager (responsible overseeing EMP)
    • General Services (implementation)
      • Timeframe
  • Tasks (start date: August 2001)
    • Purchase equipment: November 2001
    • Retrofit: February 2002

* Remember the objective: Achieved by May 2003

EMPs can be tied to other elements

  • Operational control(s)
  • Training, awareness and competence
  • Legal and other requirements
  • Emergency preparedness and response
